Printable Communication Skill Cards

Simple cards you can copy, print, or rewrite by hand. There's nothing fancy here on purpose β€” a phrase you can actually find in the moment beats a beautiful card you can't. Cut them out, tape them inside a notebook, or keep them on a shelf.

These are everyday skills, not therapy

These cards teach everyday communication and self-management skills. They are not therapy, legal advice, or medical advice. Kids should never be required to share private experiences. If a child is in danger, overwhelmed, or dealing with serious distress, involve a trusted adult right away.

Active Listening Card

LISTEN TO UNDERSTAND

Listen to understand, not just to reply.

  • "What I heard was ___."
  • "Did I get that right?"
  • "Can you say more?"

Listening can look different for different people β€” looking away, fidgeting, or moving can still be listening.

Clarifying Questions Card

QUESTIONS ARE TOOLS

  • "Can you say that another way?"
  • "What do you mean by ___?"
  • "Can you give an example?"
  • "Is this what you mean: ___?"
  • "What part should I do first?"
  • "What information am I missing?"

"I don't understand yet" is a strong move.

Explain Your Thinking Card

SHARE THE WHY

  • "I think ___ because ___."
  • "My evidence is ___."
  • "I considered ___, but chose ___ because ___."
  • "One reason is ___."

Disagree Clearly Card

QUESTION THE IDEA, NOT THE PERSON

  • "I see it differently because ___."
  • "I agree with ___, but I disagree with ___."
  • "Can I explain my view?"
  • "What makes you think that?"
  • "I need a minute before I answer."

Understanding is not the same as agreeing.

Ask for Help Card

ASKING IS A SKILL

  • "I am stuck on ___."
  • "I tried ___."
  • "I need ___."
  • "Can you show me the first step?"
  • "Can you check if I'm on the right track?"

Feedback Card

FEEDBACK IS INFORMATION

Giving:

  • "One thing that works is ___."
  • "One thing that could be clearer is ___."
  • "A question I still have is ___."

Receiving:

  • "Let me make sure I understand."
  • "What is one thing I can improve?"
  • "Can you show me where?"

Repair Script Card

REPAIR IS BRAVE

  • "I said that badly. Let me try again."
  • "I thought you meant ___. Did I get that wrong?"
  • "I'm sorry I interrupted."
  • "I'm sorry I hurt your feelings. I want to understand."
  • "What can I do to make this better?"
